Ieder jaar op 1 oktober is het 'Internationale Muziekdag' (International Music Day). Een initiatief van Yehudi Menuhin - een Amerikaans/Brits violist en dirigent. De dag werd voor het eerst georganiseerd in 1975 door de International Music Council - een adviesraad van de UNESCO op het gebied van muziek.
Muziek is in de ogen van de UNESCO een middel om vriendschap tussen de volken te bevorderen. Muziek is meer dan een aangenaam tijdverdrijf, meer dan luisterplezier. Muziek is een vorm van communicatie en niet gebonden aan grenzen, volk, geloof of ras.
Yehudi Menuhin: "... constitute a major achievement among our activities and become an event for the propagation of greater knowledge of our art, and for the strengthening of the bonds of peace and friendship between peoples through music."
Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) was een Amerikaans/Brits violist en dirigent. Hij speelde na de bevrijding van concentratiekamp Bergen-Belsen in april 1945 voor de bevrijde gevangenen van het kamp.
Op 21 juni vindt ook de Wereld Muziek Dag (Fête de la Musique) plaats
